Speculations for 1.19
It's crazy to think we've known of Caves & Cliffs for 7 months now. It feels like just yesterday it was October 3rd and we got that absolutely HUGE infodump of all these incredible new features we'd be getting! And it looks like Caves & Cliffs is here to stay for another 7 months, not being fully wrapped up until the end of 2021.
The first "post-Caves & Cliffs" update, 1.19, is still a long way off, and will probably be 2022's big update. But what will the theme be? What could possibly follow up the Caves & Cliffs update??? Here are some ideas of what I think 1.19 could be, and what I'd like to see:
The Archaeology Update
For me, the most obvious theme for 1.19 is archaeology. This feature was announced to be part of Caves & Cliffs in October 2020. But when they split Caves & Cliffs into 2 updates, it was also announced the new Archaeology system was delayed beyond the scope of Caves & Cliffs altogether. This was to give them more time to flesh out C&C and also give archaeology the time it deserves. I know Mojang have a history of the "indefinite backburner" (still waiting on the 2018 losing biome votes, the plugin API from way back when, and the red dragon), but they did state they want to make archaeology as great as it can be. This gives me hope that archaeology will get its own update. And that update will be 1.19.
In the long run this would be better, as this entirely new system can be a lot more fleshed out, rather than just being tacked onto the side of another update. But still, it would be pretty cool to see 1.19 being archaeology, and it would be almost like Caves & Cliffs Part 3.
The End Update
Since 2018, updates have mostly focused on adding to parts of the game that haven't seen an update in a while, or were lacking in content. So far, they have covered oceans, villages, the Nether, caves, and mountains. But there is still one area that is noticeably lacking in content: The End. Now, the End is meant to be super barren, but it is so barren in fact that it leaves people yearning for some new building materials, pools of dangerous end acid, a new mob or two, or even an ore.
While I don't feel this is enough to justify an entire update, I would like to see the End at least being addressed. The End could have vast improvements. I don't feel the End should be crawling with life, and I don't think they should ever add trees or a grassy-type block (I'm still fairly mixed on the fact they added "trees" and "grass" to the Nether), but there could definitely be more content in the End. A better Ender Dragon fight, pools of a dangerous new purple liquid called End Acid, a couple of new mobs and a new ore could all nicely fit within the End dimension.
Losing Biomes Update
I mentioned earlier that I was still waiting on the 2018 losing biomes to get their updates. HelenAngel recently tweeted out to the community asking which of the losing biomes from 2018 and 2019 they'd like to see updated next. This has given me hope that at least ONE of the losing biomes may get an update soon. "Swamp" won the community vote, which would give us frogs, mangrove trees, and chest-boats. In the 2019 biome vote, I actually voted Swamp, not Mountains. I know right, shocking. So I'd be happy to see the Swamp features added in 1.19. But I've always wanted to see an update where ALL the losing votes are added. The desert, savanna, swamp and badlands, as well as the losers from 2020, the Moobloom and Iceologer.
Redstone/Mapmaking Update
Do you know what's not had an actual update in a long while? Redstone. The last time redstone had a dedotated update was in early 2013. Early 2013! That's more than eight years ago now! And since these updates are all about updating areas that are lacking in updates, I don't see why they couldn't do the same for systems. Redstone features have trickled in here and there throughout the years, usually on the side of other updates, but there hasn't been an actual themed update for redstone in almost a decade. It is true that mapmaking is nowhere near as popular as it once was, but that could be in part due to a lack of redstone updates for mapmakers. The last few updates have all been very survival-based.
There are so many amazing things they could add in the field of redstone, especially now we have copper in Minecraft. Of course, one of my most desired features could be in a redstone update too: magnets!
I think this update would be a really great chance to bring people back into Redstone, as I feel redstone has become largely forgotten over the years.
Final Word
If one thing is guaranteed, it's that none of us have any idea what 1.19 will be, except the people working at Mojang. It will likely be several months at least before we find out what the theme will be, as we're only halfway through Caves & Cliffs, but it's still fun to speculate.
