7 Things I'd LOVE To See in 1.17
With the release of the latest snapshot, 21w06a, providing one of the most fundamentally game-changing changes - namely doubling the cave depth - and much more in the pipeline - it's hard to imagine how 1.17 could be even better. However, there are a few additions that I feel could add even more to 1.17. These features (barring one on this list) are extensions and expansions to 1.17 features we've already seen that could bolster the update even more!
In no particular order...
1 - Scoped Crossbow
This has been HEAVILY requested amongst the community since the release of the first 1.17 snapshot, where the spyglass was added. And I agree, this could be a really great feature to give both crossbows and spyglasses more use. By placing a crossbow and spyglass together, you get a crossbow that allows you to zoom in before and when you shoot. I don't even need to go into why this would be such a cool and useful tool in both PvP and PvE.
2 - Deeper Oceans
With the increase of the world height and doubling of the below-sea-level depth, even the Deep Oceans only go a quarter of the way to bedrock. This fact is almost SCREAMING for a Super Deep Ocean that can maybe go down to y=0! This super deep ocean could be populated with the Glow Squid too, and maybe even the occasional guardian! These Super Deep Oceans would only occur far out at sea, surrounded by Deep Ocean on all sides.
3 - Fix the Villager Mending Exploit
I have been wanting to see this fixed for a LONG time. This isn't specific to 1.17 or 1.17 features, but I feel this rather gamebreaking exploit has been in the game far too long now. By simply trapping a villager and placing and breaking a lectern, you can get ANY enchantment you like - including MENDING - in basically an infinite supply. Coupled with mechanics such as raids giving you absolutely ridiculously cheap trades, this is totally broken. Librarians should not sell enchanted books at Novice level! Seriously! Mending is a ridiculously powerful enchantment that should be EXTREMELY rare, but with this exploit, you can very quickly get an entire chest filled with Mending books. This NEEDS to be fixed.
4 - Amethyst Potion
Amethyst as it is currently doesn't have that many uses. In fact, it's only got two uses. It would be cool to maybe see amethyst be brewable into a potion. Maybe a potion of saturation or a potion of health boost or absorption. Amethyst is regarded amongst crystal-ologists for its "healing properties". And since Minecraft features a lot of alchemy and pseudo-science, it could be a good addition to see amethyst be brewed into such a potion.
5 - Goat Horns Make Stalactites Fall
Currently, the goat horn doesn't do anything other than make the raid noise. The goat horn could actually have a legit use though - clearing an area of stalactites. It could be that when you use the goat horn, it causes all stalactites in an 8 block radius to fall. But you must take cover, or else you could find yourself skewered!
6 - Stalactites Break Naturally
Fitting in with the previous suggestion, I think stalactites should also have a slight chance to break. I suggested this on the Feedback site, but it was taken down for no reason (another rant in the pipeline about the Feedback Website). But this would add a bit of danger to the Dripstone caves. Caves are dangerous - there is no two ways about it. Rockfalls are one of the major dangers when spelunking. The idea of entering a truly dangerous cave in Minecraft is thrilling. Could this be seen as a random death event? Well, no more than a pillager patrol or a dive-bombing creeper. Besides, this environmental hazard can be avoided by preparing with armor, keeping watch above you, and using the goat horn to clear the area.
7 - More Uses For Glow Ink
Their efforts to make the glow squid useful in any way were interesting, but I feel more needs to be done with the glow ink. The two uses of the glow ink - more readable signs and backlit item frames - are incredibly niche. If I have an item frame, it will be in a well-lit house. Glow signs may be good for map-makers. Really, I feel more needs to be done with this concept. For example, right-clicking on a banner with Glow Ink makes the banner backlit. Also, a bit of a long shot - they could even apply this to ANY solid block and make this a universal property - fluorescence! Imagine a build that SEEMS lit up, but mobs can spawn, because it's only been "fake" lit with Glow Ink! There is definitely a lot of untapped potential here!
And there you have it, 7 features I think would really add to 1.17 and make it an even better update than it already is!
